For Organicraft, it is important where the materials used in the leather production process come from, how it is made, how long it will last and how it can be recycled. Additionally, as a brand that prefers to embrace the slow fashion movement, we are also careful about sustainability. For this reason, we use environmentally friendly and sustainable methods produced from ethical production, throughout the process extending from the production of the products to the recycling stage.
We pay great attention to the purchasing and all processes of all our leather accessories, which come from Organicraft workshops, by checking their leather in the factory.
Before rawhide is made, it is ready for use by going through a process called tanning. This process allows the strength of the leather to be preserved and increased. There are two different tanning methods: the chrome tanning method of chrome mining, known as tanning, and the more traditional vegetable tanning method.
Chrome tanning is the integration of the components of leather. Thanks to this process, the leather becomes water resistant and easier to process. Today, approximately 80% of the leather produced in the world is tanned using chromium. After the product is applied to the skin, chromium salts are removed from the salts as a result of the process.
Vegetable tanning is a traditional method of applying leather with herbal ingredients. In this process, substances found in the peels, bodies, and sometimes fruits and products are often used. Different natural designs are available, for example acacia, carob and oak wood. Tanning agents are expanded into the skin, absorbed and collected by the skin. This process is difficult and can take over 20 days to process, however, so it is more expensive than chrome tanned leather and is rarely produced.
Both metal tanning and vegetable tanning require specific chemical classification. Since the types of these chemical particles and tanning particles are different, different particles are required for the sensitive purification and breakdown of citizens' water produced during production. The tanning process continues with the use of metal or plant materials. Chemicals are used during these processes and therefore the wastewater generated during production is required at different intervals to be treated and stored in an environmentally friendly manner. These parts may vary depending on the materials and chemicals used.
